The Monastery of La Encarnación

Plaza de la Encarnación, s/n. Tfno.: 954811121

Brief overview:

The Monastery of La Encarnación was completed in 1549, its original destination being that of the Hospital of the Encarnation of the Son of God. In 1612, the Jesuits occupied it and, in 1626, the IV Duchess of Osuna, Doña Isabel de Sandoval y Padilla, founded on the site of the old hospital the Monastery to be regulated by the nuns of the Royal and Military Order of Our Lady of Mercy (Merced) since then.

Inside, you can visit the Church, with a single nave, covered with a barrel vault with lunettes and a small dome on pendentives in the chancel. It highlights the high altar, in Baroque style, dating from 1723, today presided over by a sculpture of the Virgen de la Merced Comendadora attributed to the sculptor Fernando Ortiz. A sculpture of the Christ of Mercy must also be stood out in this Church.

Among the pieces existing in other rooms of the convent, the splendid collection of Sevillian tiles from the 18th century that surrounds the courtyard, the Dolorosa painted by Francisco Meneses and the gold and silver pieces guarded in the Sala de la Virreina, or the beautiful collection of images of Infant Jesus and his dresses that are distributed between the lower choir and other rooms of the cloister are also worth mentioning.
