Donadas Bridge

The construction of the bridge over the Guadalquivir River began in 1498 in response to the need to establish a link between Montoro and the district of Retamar, as well as between the countryside and the mountains, Andalusia and the plateau. It probably replaced an earlier pontoon structure, mentioned in some Arab sources. Built with red molinaza stone, it rides over the Guadalquivir on four semicircular arches, the central one being the widest of all.

The structure design correspond to Enrique Egas, architect of the Catholic Monarchs, while the local quarry worker Pedro Fernandez was in charge of its construction. The bridge was paid for by the Town Council and by some of the town’s maids who, according to popular legend, sold their jewels to make it possible to cross to the other side of the river, hence the name of the bridge “de las Donadas” or “de las Doncellas”. Together with the patient flow of the river and the white houses hanging over the Guadalquivir, it is the hallmark of the town of Montoro.
