Holy Week Museum (Santiago Church)

The Museo de la Semana Santa y Cofradías de Montoro (Holy Week and Brotherhoods Museum) is located in the old temple of Santiago, a church with a single nave and a baroque dome over the main chapel. It has two façades, the main one being from an earlier period than the side one, dated 1730. It corresponds to the Baroque reforms of the inside when the triumphal arch plasterwork and the main chapel dome were also added.

Within the expressions of popular religiosity taking place in the city of Montoro, the Holy Week is undoubtedly the one that bearing a greater importance. The first penitential brotherhood established in Montoro would be the Hermandad de la Santa Vera Cruz (Brotherhood of the Holy True Cross), whose first rules come from the year 1554. On the other hand, the oldest Brotherhood that have arrived to present day is the Cofradía de Nuestra Señora del Rosario (Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary), Patron Saint of Montoro, whose primitive rules date 1535.

Since 1998 the Holy Week of Montoro is declared of National Tourist Interest of Andalusia; it has preserved most of its essence that is reflected in the representation of baroque origin such as the Prendimiento (Arrest) or the Sermón del paso (Sermon of the Passion), which take place during the night of Holy Thursday and the morning of Good Friday respectively. There are essentially three pillars on which the Holy Week of Montoro is based on, the Nazarene of Montoro, the Roman Empire of Montoro and the Ancient Choir of Our Father Jesus Nazarene and Saint Mary of Sorrows. Our Father Jesus Nazarene is the statue awaking more devotion among the people of Montoro, holding the title of Honorary Mayor of the City since 2000.
