Town Archaeological Museum

The seat of the current Town Archaeological Museum of Montoro is the old church of Santa María del Castillo or de la Mota.  It is the oldest church in Montoro and was located in the highest point of the town and next to the disappeared castle (ordered to be demolished by the pact of Ecija in 1469). Its construction dates back to the second half of the thirteenth century, being along with the parish of Castro del Rio and the convent of San Pablo de Cordoba one of the earliest built in the province of Cordoba.

It is an archaic style church divided into three naves separated by pointed arches. The most remarkable feature inside are the beauty of its different types of capitals and the presence of transport materials such as supports and columns along with the disappeared Mudejar ceilings.

Opened as a museum in 1992, its museum collections are divided into four major groups, reflected in the permanent exhibition itself: geology, paleontology, archeology and ethnology.  The most remarkable pieces are Paleozoic plant fossils, a Bronze Age warrior’s stele, a Thoracata military sculpture dating from the time of Trajan, and a praying angel by the sculptor from Cordoba Mateo Inurria.
